The service slightly gamifies the experience by adding a POI saving option. The PC crapware problem has finally gotten bad enough that Microsoft is now charging users to fix it. For $99 Microsoft is now offering to strip consumers’ Windows PCs of all unnecessary software pre-installed by PC makers, AllThingsD reports. Affectionally dubbed “crapware”,  the software  is installed by PC makers in exchange for cash from vendors and is almost universally hated by owners of new Windows PCs. This makes the removal program an arrangement bordering on a racket: PC makers get paid to put the software on computers, and Microsoft gets paid to remove it.

With Knowledge Base plugged into Google Search, Google is going to get a heck of a lot better at knowing what things (not just what words) you’re searching for and delivering better results — more useful, more visual results. How Google’s new brain works Briefly, Knowledge Base is Google’s attempt to…

  • Stimulus Money Goes To Ground.

    Steve King

Under the banner of saving jobs, kick-starting the economy and keeping small businesses and organizations afloat through tough economic times, the US government has handed out more than $840 Billion in federal stimulus money since 2009. Of that, more than $33 Billion went to California. Some of the largest and most recognized companies in Silicon Valley—nearly all of which are flush with cash—were awarded $94 million as either prime recipients or sub-recipients. Google got $686,681 as a sub-recipient on a contract to reach 14 additional different language audiences for the 2010 Census…

  • A Bike to Work Day to remember!

    Anna Kingsmith
    14 May 2012 | 5:13 pm
Although I’ve ridden on Bike to Work Day for the past five years, Thursday was my first time behind the table, passing out coffee cake, bagels, and bananas to all of my fellow cyclists. I was posted at the California Avenue Energizer Station, right near the Caltrain station, so we had lots of visitors, including quite a few of my neighbors! When we started closing up shop around 9:00 am, the count was close to 700 cyclists passing by, with 373 stopping for goodies. I’m always happy to get up early as long as there is a sunny day and a bike ride ahead of me, but it was particularly…

This guest blog was submitted by Wendee Crofoot of the Mountain View Coalition for Sustainable Planning. Mountain View has a lack of convenient on street bike parking, the solution is more conspicuous, convenient, and plentiful racks. Bicyclists lock their bikes to tree cages, light posts, and railings that were designed to assist the elderly and disabled. Do you live, work, shop, or play in Mountain View? Would you spend more time and/or money in downtown Mountain View if bike parking were conspicuous, convenient, and plentiful? We need your support to advocate with several agencies, city…

I’ve been hearing a lot about our First Friday People-Powered art show, but didn’t have a good idea what it would be like. Last Tuesday we all went over to the Art Ark Gallery on Sixth Street in San Jose to finish hanging the pictures. Here’s a picture of us at work. This is a really good show, in a nice space. I was amazed at the quality of the work; paintings, photos, and 3-dimensional art. Most, but not all involve bicycling. Kudos to Colin Heyne for putting all this together. So if you’re interested, or even want to purchase some bike related art, come to the show at 1035 South…

  • IBM Patents A Way To Help People Lose Weight (IBM)

    Julie Bort
    14 May 2012 | 11:57 am
IBM has been awarded a patent for a game that will pay rewards to people who eat right. IBM researcher Michael Paolini is the inventor of the game and says he lost 18 pounds by playing it, reports the New York Times. Paolini says the idea is to give people immediate rewards for doing the right thing. So, choose an apple instead of a slice of apple pie, and, ca-ching!, you could get 50 cents awarded to your account. The game was inspired by a hybrid car, the Honda Insight, that instantly tells drivers how their driving is affecting their gas mileage, Paolini told the Times. The inventor thinks…

  • Yahoo CEO Thompson Out For Lying On Resume

    Daya Baran
    13 May 2012 | 4:43 pm
Yahoo CEO (YHOO), Scott Thompson is out. The official statement simply says, Scott Thompson has left the company. It doesn’t provide a reason. Thompson lied on this resume, about having an engineering degree. When it was exposed, he lied about lying about no lying about his bogus resume. Its odd that Thompson work as eBay for 10 years and even served as Paypal president with that bogus resume. Ironically, the Yahoo board did not fire Thompson, they let him resign. That means Thompson will probably walk away with a considerable amount of money, hence richly rewarding Thompson for lying.
