  • Will the market like Facebook?

    Bloomberg News
    2 Feb 2012 | 7:44 am
By Elizabeth Ody and Margaret Collins Wealthy investors aren’t clamoring for a piece of Facebook Inc.’s initial public offering because some own the stock through private transactions while others shy away from risky technology deals, according to advisors. “It’s kind of the late arrivals who get excited around the time of the IPO,” said Jason Thomas, chief investment officer of Aspiriant, whose clients on average have about US$10 million under management with the Los Angeles-based firm. “Our clients remember the tech bubble very well, and are appropriately skeptical of being the…

  • Facebook Wants All Two Billion Internet Users, But Growth Rates Are Slowing

    Eric Eldon
    1 Feb 2012 | 7:53 pm
Make no mistake about Facebook’s ambitions. “There are more than two billion global Internet users,” its S-1 filing states, “…and we aim to connect all of them.” As evidence of its ability to reach this goal, the company says that it already has some countries with above 80% penetration rates among users. The problem, as the filing also notes, is that “our rates of user and revenue growth will decline over time.” A quick analysis of the worldwide monthly and daily active user counts in the document shows this phenomenon is already in full…

Palmap’s Dr. Ronald Zhang explains to the IBM SmartCamp Global Finals audience how Palmap’s point of sale and indoor mapping technology will change the way people live and shop, not only in China but around the globe. Dr. Ronald Zhang left his home city of Beijing to attend the University of Central Florida, and didn’t go back home for eight years. When he returned, how found there were new buildings and roads and shopping malls, and he almost didn’t recognize the place, never mind couldn’t find his way around. After catching the American entrepreneurial bug during his time…

We hope to include a lot more photos in posts, so everyone can see how vibrant and diverse the cycling community is in Silicon Valley (and it doesn't hurt that nearly everyone has a camera on them at all times!). ^_^

This morning I happened to be in the office at 8:00 am when Peter Brull from the League of American Bicyclists called me to let me know that the LAB members had elected me to their board of directors. He's evidently on east coast time. I was invited to run for the LAB board by several of their existing board members. Although sitting on the board of an active national organization will take a lot of time, it fits well with SVBC's policy goal to spend a portion of our efforts on national-level advocacy. The SVBC policy advisory committee thinks it's appropriate to put a portion of our efforts…
  • New look, familiar challenges

You probably noticed the re-do of our website. It is still a work in progress, causing us all various degrees of frustration, including for our web developer, who is working hard to get it finished. It is going to be great when it is finished. In addition to the redesign, which is a lot in itself, we moved to a new host. This will be better in the long run, as our former long-time host caused various problems and breakdowns from time to time. However, our email is tied up with our website, a connection that I don’t pretend to understand, and when the website was moved, the former host just…

The Future of transportation is here… and it does not look good for cyclists. On Thursday Feb 2nd, the House Transportation committee will take the first vote on the new transportation bill called the American Energy and Infrastructure Jobs Act. This bill shockingly eliminates all federal funding for biking and walking. This is a $260 billion bill that will support all federally funded transportation programs for the next…

This will be the inaugural changelog. I am not going to follow any particular standard; rather, I will try to make it as readable as possible, so folks at home can play along. Feel free to leave comments if you want clarification on anything. ^_^ * Upgraded from Drupal 6.22 to Drupal 7.10 * Migrated to a new host, as the old host sucked on many levels. * Applied new theme (it is called Velocipede; not to be confused with the raptors with a similar name). * New site structure (ongoing; we are still sorting through the links, so leave a comment if your favorite page is missing). * Set up Mollom…

  • India’s Internet Laws Reveal A Backward Nation

    Daya Baran
    6 Feb 2012 | 10:23 pm
You hear it on TV everyday India and China, India and China and how they are going to kick everyone’s behind. China, yes. But India is a joke. Everyone knows it but nobody says. Except for Hillary Clinton, as it was revealed in the Wikileaks documents. She said, paraphrasing here, [They are so delusional only they believe it]. Think about it, India does less trade with the U.S. than tiny Switzerland. Its embarrassing, yet India is of the opinion that they are the same as China, which is the U.S. largest trading partner and pretty much every other country’s. Today, India passed a…

    Daya Baran
    6 Feb 2012 | 8:53 pm
Mark Zuckerberg is the next Rupert Murdoch, and given internet time he might get there in a couple of years not decades, says Rob Cox of Reuters He says that users and investors are ceding so much control over to Zuckerberg that it is bound to stop being in their best interest. Due to proxies, Zuckerberg’s shares have 10 times the votes of ordinary shares. That wields him 57 percent of the votes despite controlling 28 percent of the shares. That lets him overrule the majority. He says investors have allowed Zuckerberg to maintain an iron grip on Facebook (FB) because his dorm-room…

    Daya Baran

Halliburton (HAL), the oilfield services company, once a bastion for the Blackberry (RIMM), is dumping RIM’s platform and switching Apple’s (AAPL) iOS. “Over the next year, we will begin expanding the use of our mobile technology by transitioning from the BlackBerry (RIMM) platform that we currently use to smartphone technology via the iPhone,” the firm told employees in an internal newsletter. Halliburton is taking the same path for it 70,000 employees as Clorox (CLX) did last year, when it ditched the BlackBerry for the iPhone. The company once relied heavily on…
