    Vivek Wadhwa
    21 Nov 2009 | 7:45 am
When pitching to VC’s, entrepreneurs hype the heck out of their ideas, years of experience and management teams. But I’ve never heard of anyone touting their luck or connection to God. After reading the posts on TechCrunch, one could easily get the impression that God doesn’t play much of role in Silicon Valley. But ask any successful entrepreneur in private what made them successful, and you might just hear a different story. In a research project my team just completed, the majority of 549 company founders told us that their most important success factor, after “experience” and…
  • Uh-Oh: Gameloft Moves Away From Android Development

    Greg Kumparak
    21 Nov 2009 | 7:33 am
The sudden surge in interest in Android (largely due to all of the hype surrounding the Droid) has caused a lot of developers to reconsider the platform. Atleast one major development house, however, isn't impressed. Earlier today, Alexandre de Rochefort, Finance Director of Gameloft, told an investor conference that the company had "significantly cut [their] investment in Android platform, just like ... many others". Gameloft is one of the largest mobile games companies around, having pulled in roughly $132 million in the last three quarters alone. While there are plenty of fish in the…

Do a search for Google Wave on the App Store from your iPhone or desktop client, and you’ll see an application called just that pop up, ready to be installed as soon as you fork over $0.99 (or €0.79 in my case). One caveat: it’s not built, authorized or in any way endorsed by Google. Spotted by Stuart Dredge over at Mobile Entertainment, the unofficial Google Wave iPhone app seemingly slipped past Apple’s usually and notoriously rigorous quality assurance and trademark compliance team and made its way to the App Store (iTunes link – up to you to decide if this is…

FYI, LondonVC is a genuine VC and TechCrunch Europe has met them face to face. One of the biggest challenges for any investor (regardless of the stage/type of investment they target) and founders alike is hiring great talent. In early stage investing the team may be the single criteria upon which an investment decision is based (considering how many times when that's…

    20 Nov 2009 | 3:06 pm
Guest post by DD Ganguly, CEO, Dimdim A few years back, I used to work for a global company with more than 13,200 people. My office alone had more than 1,000 people, so when winter rolled around, it'd be hard not to encounter someone who had a cold or the flu. Back then, it was unpleasant to hear a colleague sneezing or coughing in the halls, but it wouldn't prevent me from being in the office, nor would I be upset that they were coming to work sick. But now, coughing in your elbow is not enough to prevent the spread of dangerous, highly contagious diseases like the H1N1 virus. We must change…

There has been an epidemic of head lice in my daughter's third grade classroom, and unfortunately she became the latest victim this weekend.  She's fine now, but after all they have put me through, I find myself nurturing a deep-seeded hatred for lice. Honestly, what possible purpose do these creatures serve?  Are they food for some other animal (and if so, why doesn't that animal do a better job keeping the lice population in check?). And why won't they die?  Lice seem to be virtually indestructible.  Sure, they die within 24 hours if they lose their human host, but they cling to said…

Neel Shah got his scandal-phone returned; Kevin Marks got retweeted by ghosts and Al Yankovic was surrounded by nobodies. The Twitterati were haunted, in a good way. Neel Shah, Page Six gossip and former Gawker and Radar-ite, was glad his phone didn't end up with the likes of his present or past employers. (He should be.) Tech pundit and Berkeleyite Andrew Keen articulated an ideology of what might be called, if you're avoiding Rush Limbuagh-isms, "femifascism." British Telecom's Kevin Marks hopes that's an iPhone you're discreetly working in your pocket. Singer Weird Al Yankovic does this…
  • Microsoft Let NSA Spooks 'Enhance' Windows 7

    Ryan Tate
    20 Nov 2009 | 9:47 am
A National Security Agency director just bragged to a Senate subcommittee about his agency's close "cooperation" with Microsoft to, err, "enhance" how Windows 7 guards a user's privacy. Doesn't that just make you feel all warm and fuzzy? The spooks at the NSA are, of course, notorious for their role monitoring internet activity, and for their use of warantless wiretaps to monitor U.S. phones, often illegally. So computer users could easily be worried to hear that the NSA has "partnerships" with Microsoft, which makes their operating systems; Intel, which makes their wireless chipsets; and…
  • Regretsy Book to Be Not Quite as Good as Regretsy.com

    20 Nov 2009 | 9:28 am
The heretofore anonymous founder of Regretsy, the blog that appropriately mocks your dumb arts-and-crafts projects, has been outed. Because she got a book deal! New blog-to-book trend: Saying right up front the book will be more paltry than the blog. Speakeasy reports that the Regretsy mastermind is April Winchell, well-known comedic human. Notably, her new book publishers admit: "We're not going to use everything from the Web site," said Jill Schwartzman, the purchasing editor at Random House. "The ones we're going to pick are the ones that work for a book-reading audience." So read…
  • Why Google's New OS Is For Losers

    19 Nov 2009 | 6:57 pm
A Twitter engineer said Google's new "Chrome" OS is something you resign yourself to; a CNET writer said it's something you are infected with; and Mediaite might hang out awkwardly on Tumblr with it. The Twitterati were ruthless. Twitter engineer Alex Payne is, needless to say, not impressed with Google's new "Chrome" operating system. Financial writer Heidi Moore is, needless to say, as unimpressed with Best Buy as Alex Payne. CNET's Rafe Needleman is, needless to say, as unimpressed with sleazy sales tactics as Hedi Moore, as unimpressed with Google Chrome as Alex Payne and, for all his…
  • Yahoo's Lesbian 'Don Juan' Backhands Lindsay Lohan

    Ryan Tate
    19 Nov 2009 | 5:46 pm
Courtenay Semel, the sapphic spawn of former Yahoo CEO Terry Semel, is quoted in the lesbian magazine Curve dissing former lady friend Lindsay Lohan. Then she complains that the media twists her relationships. The nerve of this one. Courtenay Semel, for those who are not familiar with her heiress-level fameballing, is not a shy and retiring person. A person does not make out with her attention-craving girlfriend Tila Tequila on red carpets because she mistrusts the media; a person does not scream at a club bouncer to "just fucking Google me, you dumb fuck" because she mistrusts the media; and…

How attractive is San Diego as a place to start a company compared with the Silicon Valley? Santa Barbara? Los Angeles? On Thursday evening the “Sweat Equity” series of seminars sponsored by San Diego’s Software Industry Council (SDSIC) brought together a distinguished panel with a venture capitalist and successful entrepreneurs answering questions, drilling into their experiences, as well as exploring perceptions they’ve developed over several years doing business in San Diego. More than 50 interested attendees with the hope and aspiration of either starting their own…

The internet buzz this week presented two stories regarding sexual abuse and LDS bishops.  One Bishop has admitted failure in pursuing legal action of one of his patrons, the other is accussed of sexual abuse himself on three brothers. Burrell Mohler Jr. Mohler has been charged with 42 charges which occurred over a decade.    Many initially thought the incidents had occurred while Mohler was a member of the Community of Christ.  The church has been quick to seperate themselves for the incident.  Mohler’s LDS bishop at the time, Paul Tonga, has admitted to Fox 4 news that the…

We hear about it in the news every so often out here in Silicon Valley: a big player at Google has left for Facebook.  Or a Yahoo executive has been seduced by Microsoft.  Or some perky young startup has snatched a head developer from a venerable software giant. Silicon Valley’s human resources arena, ripe with star engineers and executives, is  like a day time soap opera, full of unexpected surprises and shocking betrayals.  Every time a transfer of talent occurs, juicy questions immediately begin to pop up surrounding the jump.  Were they abused at the first company?  Were they…
  • Maveron Casting for Consumer Investments in SF

Though there’s no lack of venture capitalists in Silicon Valley, you can count one more. Maveron this week announced it is opening a San Francisco office, headed by partner Amy Errett, the former CEO of Olivia.com who joined Maveron as an entrepreneur in residence two years ago. Errett (a fly-fishing enthusiast, as pictured) told us that Maveron differentiates itself because it will only fund consumer-focused businesses, and it spans the range of seed to late-stage investments. With portfolio companies such as kids’ browser KidZui, language education site Livemocha and online…

According to MLS Listings Inc. data, 26 single family homes closed escrow in October within the city of Los Altos zip codes of 94024 and 94022.   This is slightly below the 12 year average (for the month of October) of 28 closed sales of single family homes. The graph below shows the last 12 years of listings and sales figures for the month of October. Homes listed at the lower end of the Los Altos market continue to drive our market.  Twelve homes listed 1.5 million and below sold in October.  Eight homes listed between 1.5 and 2.0 million sold.  Four homes listed…

Many buyers think that purchasing a bank owned home is an easy way to get a bargain property in today’s real estate market.  While this can be true, most of the time it is time intensive and an emotional roller coaster for buyers. A client of mine sent me the link to this video created by Kris Berg of San Diego Castles.  It is a hilarious look at the realty of most REO home purchases.   FYI, if you need a savvy agent in the San Diego area who also happens to have a fabulous sense of humor, call on Kris Berg.

I paid $1,400,000 and I need $1,650,000 Whenever I go over a  home pricing analysis with a seller, I ask them what they think their home should be listed at and why.  Invariably, their answer comes back to what they paid for the home, what they put into the home (upgrades, remodeling etc.) or what they need to get out of the sale in order to get to where they want to be.  I call this “needs” based pricing.  I need to get “X” amount because I paid “Y” and I need “X+some amount” to get to my next place. In an ideal world this would be…

  • Interesting look at rail transit from this year's Rail-Volution conference

    Carlos
    13 Nov 2009 | 7:04 pm
As demand grows for rail transit in this country grows, discussion is also increasing on how we should finance and manage it. William Lind, a public transportation advocate agrues that we are looking at the wrong metrics when evaluating public transit. He was at the Rail-Volution conference to promote his new book "Moving Minds - Conservatives and Public Transportation" (co-authored with Paul M. Weyrich) to give liberal transportation advocates additional points of discussion to promote the benefits of rail. Instead of arguing that public transportation will reduce global warming; he suggests…

  • Silicon Valley ranked 26th most dangerous metro area for walking

    colin
    10 Nov 2009 | 3:39 pm
Well, it could be worse, but it certainly could be better, too. Transportation for America just released a report on the most dangerous metropolitan areas for pedestrians. The report takes into account the percentage of residents who walk to work and the average annual pedestrian deaths per 100,000 people to acheive a "Pedestrian Danger Index," or PDI. The San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara area received a PDI of 71.9. Not bad, compared to the highest, a 221.5 earned by Orlando-Kissimmee, FL, but still worse than our fellow Bay Area population center San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont, which scored a…

Dr. Christopher Thompson, a Los Angeles doctor, was found guilty of six felonies and one misdemeanor on Monday, November 2. The convictions concerned an incident of motorist-on-cyclist road rage last summer that left two cyclists badly injured. From the Los Angeles Times: "Thompson, a former emergency room physician who lives along the winding five-mile road, claimed that he was merely trying to take a photograph of Stoehr and Peterson, evidence of the way cyclists flout the law in the canyon and flip off the residents. An LAPD traffic investigator who arrived on the scene shortly after the…

Many buyers looking to purchase a condo in today’s real estate market are obviously looking for a deal. And rightfully so with the number of foreclosures and short sales on the market these days. But what many condo buyers don’t realize or fail to realize the importance of, is that they are not just buying a piece of real estate, they are also buying a membership into the homeowners association (HOA). Most buyers are aware of this fact. Sure that means there are rules to follow, HOA dues, CC&R’s, and probably HOA meetings. No big deal, right? Well, probably no big deal…
