Google “translator phone” to enable real-time misunderstandings

If Google Wave Is The Future, Google Buzz Is The Present
9 Feb 2010 | 10:40 amSee our live notes from today’s Google Buzz event here. Google has a problem. Despite having their hands in just about everything online, they’ve never been able to tackle what is a key part of the fabric of the web: social. Yes, they have Orkut and OpenSocial, but no one actually uses them. Okay, some people use them, but not in the meaningful social ways that people use Facebook or even Twitter. Today, Google may have just solved their social problem. Google Buzz is easily the company’s boldest attempt yet to build a social network. Imagine taking elements of Twitter,… -

And now Gowalla will has released its API today. In a blog post announcing the API, Gowalla encourages developers to build out features that incolve location and the community, highlighting the recent addition of user-curated trips. Google Street View Goes To The Top Of The Mountain
9 Feb 2010 | 10:31 amGoogle’s Street View has gone to many strange places, even off-road. But in preparation for the Winter Olympics it equipped a snowmobile with 360-degree cameras and took it to the top of Whistler, the Canadian ski resort where the Games will take place. The slope-side views can be seen in the map on Google’s new Winter Olympics information page. Google should do this for all major ski mountains. It’s a great way to see if you really want to go up to the top of that double black diamond chair lift. Here is a video showing how they got the images: -

Google’s enhanced local ads put heat on Yelp
5 Feb 2010 | 2:11 pmWe learned in late December that Yelp turned down an acquisition offer from Google reported to be worth $500 million. Yelp then raised $25 million from Elevation Partners, with another $75 million possibly coming down the road. It may need that money to ward off Google, which is ramping up its local advertising offerings. The new service places Yelp directly in Google’s scope. And I wonder if it won’t lead Yelp to regret not selling when they had the chance. Google is now testing a paid, enhanced advertising feature that lets small businesses add all sorts of content to the… -
Apple: The new/old Pirates of Silicon Valley?
3 Feb 2010 | 1:08 pmNoah Wyle as Steve Jobs and Anthony Michael Hall as Bill Gates A few months back, I noticed a bunch of folks tweeting about the 1999 made-for-TV-movie “Pirates of Silicon Valley.” I remember hearing about the movie just as I was moving to Silicon Valley that year, but never got around to watching it. I had heard mixed things about the movie, and its accuracy, but the tweets seemed pretty positive, so I decided to rent it and see for myself. It exceeded my tremendously low expectations. Though as far as factual accuracy, it’s hard to say where truth ends and creative license… -
More on Google lobbying and influence
1 Feb 2010 | 4:00 amOver the weekend, my column looked at the remarkable growth in Google’s lobbying operation in Washington, D.C. In just four years, Google has become the valley’s second largest company when it comes to lobbying expenditures. Naturally, I left out a some details. While the story focused on money, there are other ways Google has been trying to extend its influence. And their adoption of these strategies shows how quickly the company has become savvy in the ways of Washington. Let’s run through a few of these. Google’s lobbying team includes the usual requisite of former… -
Apple earnings first of many to be boosted by new accounting rules
26 Jan 2010 | 12:28 pmLast fall, the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) approved changes to the way many high-tech companies will recognize revenue. We saw the first of what will be many earnings reports affected by this when Apple reported on Monday results of its fiscal first-quarter earnings. Other companies likely to be affected include such heavy weights as Cisco Systems and Tivo. Often such changes take months for companies to adopt. And in this case, companies have until 2011 to adopt them. But this one is different because it will give companies a significant bump in short-term revenue. So many… -
How my Wii column drove gamers crazy
22 Jan 2010 | 11:40 amBoy, is that an understatement. I have been learning that lesson all week since we published my story Monday on “Why we didn’t get a Wii for Christmas.” The story, which I figured was a pretty innocent tale of my family’s decision, has sent some members of the gaming community off the deep end. To recap: My wife and I had planned to get a Wii video gaming console for Christmas. Like a fool, I didn’t do my research beforehand and didn’t realize all the extra accessories I’d have to buy when I got to the store. But as parents, we also weren’t…

Did The British Invent The Internet?
8 Feb 2010 | 11:51 amInteresting article on BBC News about early British computer pioneers.By splitting data into packets and threading them on the same line, the carrying capacity of that link could be boosted and the whole network made more powerful. Roger Scantlebury, who worked with Dr Davies, presented the ideas about "packet switching" to a conference in the US, where they were picked up by the creators of the nascent Arpanet, the fledgling internet. Does that mean Britain invented the internet? "Yes and no," said Mr Scantlebury. "Certainly the underlying technology of the internet, which is packet… -
Analysis: Online Retailers - Caught Between A Rock And A Big Hard Place
8 Feb 2010 | 9:37 amI never believed in online shopping price comparison services. Because I never believed that retailers would allow their sites to be scraped and their prices easily compared. Why would they do that? What advantage is there in allowing third-party services to undermine their business?I have rarely been able to find a straightforward price comparison that was able to factor in everything, such as shipping, taxes, and extras. The East coast camera retailers, for example, would advertise low prices online but then charge you extra for flash memory, shipping, warranties, and 'camera kits,' that… -

It is also selling carbon offset credits for $1.89 a pop. The credits will go toward purchasing clean power to neutralize the 127 kilograms of greenhouse gases each of the band’s fans, on average, generates to see the band play. Incidentally, the Dora-1 project could save as many as 30,000 tons of greenhouse gases a year. A modest facility by most standards, the geothermal plant is designed to generate 7.9 megawatts of power. In Turkey, however,… -
How Sergey Brin uses Google Buzz as a business product
9 Feb 2010 | 11:29 amGoogle Buzz, the social sharing tool that Google just announced at a press event in Mountain View, isn’t just for the fun. The company said it’s going to be launching a version of Buzz as an enterprise product, as a part of its Google Apps bundle of business applications. During the presentation, Google was pretty vague about Buzz in a business context, both in terms of how it might be used and when it will launch (“soon” is all the company would say). During the question-and-answer session, Google co-founder Sergey Brin offered one example: When he was writing his New… -

You Deserve to Have Your School Taken Away
9 Feb 2010 | 6:00 amParents, I’m a Geography instructor at the College of San Mateo and my colleagues and I have been fighting tooth and nail to save the San Francisco Bay Area's schools as the State of California systematically dismantles our entire public education system. In Obama's budget, it's techies vs. taxes
8 Feb 2010 | 8:26 amBy Jia Lynn Yang, writer There’s a frequent line in President Obama’s speeches that makes every U.S. tech executive cringe: his vow to cut tax breaks for “companies that ship our jobs overseas.” Obama’s brushing over some details here. The U.S. tax code does not literally give a company a tax break every time it moves a job offshore. But it does allow companies to defer paying taxes on their overseas profits, so long as the money remains invested outside the U.S. Obama has vowed to change this part of the law, and for months tech CEOs have been coming through Washington… -

Now, at 400 million users and growing, it’s firing a salvo directly at Google and Yahoo. TechCrunch’s Michael Arrington reports that Facebook is deep into a project long rumored to be in the works: creating its own Web-based e-mail. With Facebook gravitating to the center of the online world for hundreds of millions, it is well positioned for such a move. Facebook users already stay in touch and share links…

Los Altos Real Estate Market Update – A 12 Year History of Home Sales
5 Feb 2010 | 9:40 amBelow are the real estate sales statistics for single family homes sold within the city of Los Altos going back to 1998. These statistics go to prove that last year was a difficult year for local real estate. Note: all data was taken from our local MLS and is deemed accurate but not guaranteed. 62 percent of all single family home listings sold in 2009. This is about seven percentage points lower than the 12 year average of 69%. Only 2001 and 2008 had a lower percentage of listings sell. Listings also continue to be off relative to prior years. Not reflected in the above… -
Live From Steps of The County Courthouse, It’s a Video Showing How A Trustee’s Sale Works!
26 Jan 2010 | 12:03 pmIf you’re looking for a bargain, one can be found in the foreclosure market. However, it takes plenty of patience and solid market knowledge. Oh, did I mention that you also need cash and lots of it – no loans or I.O.U.’s accepted. Yesterday I went down to 190 N. Market Street in San Jose to check on a property that was scheduled to be sold at a trustee’s sale. I came home with this video that shows how the process works. The video is longer than I hoped for and won’t challenge Avatar for best picture, but I think it accurately details the trustee sale… -

VMT, mode share and the 280 morning commute
9 Feb 2010 | 8:54 amLast night I attended the San Jose General Plan Task Force 2040 meeting. The topic for discussion was transportation but specifically mode share and VMT. Mode share describes how we get around; wheter by bike, walking, car, carpool, or any form of transit (public or private). VMT, or vehicle miles traveled is a semi-wonky term that refers to how many miles each person drives each year. On average Californians drive 15,000 miles a year. During the meeting, the staff of San Jose's Department of Transportation (DOT) proposed different scenarios for reducing VMT; from road diets, to parking… -

From Copenhagen to Amsterdam
17 Jan 2010 | 4:25 pmBike garages that hold 10,000 bikes and bikes that last 100 years. Wow! Only in Amsterdam. <!--break--> This is a short (2 minute) clip from Amsterdam. Two things to notice; the cycle paths in central business districts next to shops and restaurants, and the amount of people out on their bikes enjoying the city. No drive through burger joints, no ferrying children in SUVs. -
Winter Cycling - Don't let the rain slow you down
17 Jan 2010 | 3:32 pmAfter seeing Mikael Coleville-Andersen speak in San Francisco in October it is refreshing to always see his videos from Copenhagen. Here is one showing January cycling in the city. This is from his site Copenhagenize. <!--break--> Copenhagen January Cycling - Your Country from Copenhagenize on Vimeo. Here is what Mikael noted in his post: "Another little winter film from the streets and bike lanes of Copenhagen. Snow and sub-zero temperatures and the bicycles roll on. There's even TWO bike lane snowploughs in the film for the Bicycle Infrastructure Fetishists :-). In both instances you can… -
Get SMART - Designing trains for cyclists
14 Jan 2010 | 9:31 amImagine being able to design you own airplane interior on your San Jose to Austin flight. Wider seats, more legroom, larger restrooms would be a start. Well, sorry but that's not going to happen. However members of the community are being involved in the design of the new SMART train interiors. SMART which stands for Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit, will run 70-mile route between Cloverdale and Larkspur. Service is expected to start in 2014. Right now Caltrain is going through the same process. With the planned electrification of the rail line, new rail car design will require input from the…

Bright Lights and Electronic Signs in Downtown San Jose
3 Feb 2010 | 12:32 pmSo the San Jose City Council is giving the green light on loosening up restrictions on signs in San Jose and even allowing more electronic signs in downtown San Jose and certain other locations. The City Council gave preliminary approval on policies that would permit more downtown business to put up programmable electronic signs similar to the ones currently at the downtown Flames and the new Market by Safeway. The permission to install these bright, programmable signs in downtown would obviously be encouraging for current and future businesses in downtown San Jose and this is obviously one… -

Practical Tips for Buying a Condo in Today’s Market
27 Oct 2009 | 11:37 amMany buyers looking to purchase a condo in today’s real estate market are obviously looking for a deal. And rightfully so with the number of foreclosures and short sales on the market these days. But what many condo buyers don’t realize or fail to realize the importance of, is that they are not just buying a piece of real estate, they are also buying a membership into the homeowners association (HOA). Most buyers are aware of this fact. Sure that means there are rules to follow, HOA dues, CC&R’s, and probably HOA meetings. No big deal, right? Well, probably no big deal…

It is coming together
31 Jan 2010 | 7:37 amAt the end of the last year/start of the new year, I wrote a #best09 series of posts, inspired by Gwen Bell. It was refreshing to look back over 2009 with a positive view, remembering things like the best restaurant moment, best social web moment, best trip, best person, best book, etc., instead of looking back on all the things that were wrong with my life...like I normally do at the start of a new year. The last entry was a resolution, very traditional new year's stuff and fitting for the new year, especially after having done an exercise on the positives. MY RESOLUTION 1 MONTH… -

'"It's not the money I care about," Coco muses, "it's the independence."' - Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky by Chris Greenhalgh
28 Jan 2010 | 11:20 amWomen entreprenuers and businesswomen can be seen in a different light than their male counterparts. The urge to go for it can be diminished by the struggle to create a balance with the other pieces of their lives. Home and work conflict much? When women don't have families, is it easier for them to immerse themselves in work? A couple of months ago I was invited to participate as a guest on a conference call with my sister's company's women's book club. The subject was one of my favorite reads from 2009 (#best09), The Shriver Report. It was such an engaging discussion -… -
Take the Pearl Pledge - Pearls of Wisdom Cervical Cancer Awareness
7 Jan 2010 | 11:00 pmLast month, I had the opportunity to be a part of a conversation with other SV Moms Group bloggers, Michelle Whitlock, and ABC News Medical Contributor Dr. Marie Savard ("Dr. Marie"). It was a frank and open call...and I learned a lot. As a cancer survivor, I am hyper-interested in learning anything about how any cancer can be PREVENTED. And the amazing news is, cervical cancer is a cancer that can be prevented. Some statistics: Cervical cancer used to be the #1 cause of death and it still remains the #2 cause of cancer (2nd only to breast cancer). There is no other cancer we know… -
