    27 Jan 2012 | 4:58 pm
Let’s say you’re an NFL running back. When the quarterback hands you the ball, what do you do? You run. You run hard, and you run fast. If you hesitate for just a second, you immediately get demolished by a bunch of defenders. In football or business, the last thing you want to do is freeze up in a critical situation. Yet every holiday season, the e-commerce systems of retailers across America are failing companies and end-users alike, leading to mass frustration and millions of dollars of lost revenue. What’s the problem? Well, as user loads increase, their Java-based…

We had Aaron Patzer over at the Founder Institute Brussels last wednesday. Intense. For those asking themselves what it is that makes Silicon Valley stand out from the crowd, a talk with the founder of Mint is all it takes. A whole other league, a different sport even: his sheer intelligence, focus and intensity makes anyone not giving it the full 120%, feel like a glorified hobbyist. But this was not the point of the evening, the point of the evening was “fundraising”: two interesting talks by Aaron and Rodrigo Sepùlveda Schulz. Rodrigo, another far too intelligent man for this…

  • Living Large in Silicon Valley: A Follow-up

Earlier this week I showed some typical single family home sales right above the cut-off point for the highest of the three tiers measured by the SF Case-Shiller Index.  (If you have no idea what I’m talking about, go read the linked article.  Go on, read it.)  That is, how much house can you get for $579,803 or more in each of the five participating counties that contribute to the CSI-SF.  Let’s just say that none of the homes were what most of you might think of as “upper tier.”  Guess it’s all that 99 versus 1 percent stuff, and television only showing…

I’m not promising updates every day, but for sure there will be a couple of posts…

As the lucky staff person who gets to receive payments and keep track of volunteer hours, I see the names of all the individuals and companies who support SVBC throughout the year. Today, I’d like to call out some of the bike shops that have become great supporters of our mission in many ways. Chain Reaction Bicycles contributes up to $2,500 per year of the amounts earned by participants in Plus3 Network, as well as 5% of the sales they make to SVBC members. (If you aren’t familiar with Plus3, check it out at www.plus3network.com. Sign up for free and log your exercise to contribute.

Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition sponsored our first team meeting in San Jose last night at Pho69. We were joined by several members who work for the City of San Jose as well as other local residents. We all had one vision in mind: to make San Jose a safe and fun place to ride a bike. After introductions were made, the team shared different experiences riding in San Jose and set the groundwork for areas of focus, not only for biking around San Jose, but also for the direction of the team. Our first focus is to dive into San Jose's Bike Plan and decide what we feel is important for the City of…

We had a great meeting of the SVBC San Jose Team last night. Thanks to everybody who came out, and thanks to Pho 69 for giving us a quiet, spacious loft to meet in! The meeting was a great opportunity for bike advocates, hopeful bike-riders-to-be, and recent bike-friendly transplants to San Jose to meet each other, meet several SVBC staff members, and catch up on what San Jose is doing to increase bike access and infrastructure. Of particular interest were the San Jose Bike Plan and General Plan, both of which lay out goals and strategies for increasing the number of trips taken by bike in…

Yesterday Jen and I met with a team in Los Altos Hills--the mayor, the city manager, and the lead for the new Traffic and Safety Committee. We discussed bicyclist safety issues as well as the frustration some of their residents feel about cyclists, and proactive ways to deal with that. We made plans to give our Share the Road presentation at an upcoming city event to reach out to the motoring citizens of LAH. We also discussed having a session for elected official, city management, and law enforcement officers from LAH and neighboring cities, along with team and ride leaders, at our upcoming…

    16 Dec 2011 | 12:48 pm
At the San Jose Downtown Association’s (SJDA) winter board meeting last Friday, the long-rumored decision was finally made and the plug was pulled on downtown San Jose’s Music in the Park. The popular concert series started out in 1989 as a Friday lunchtime series. The following year it moved to Thursday nights. Music in the Park has hosted such acclaimed acts as Tower of Power, Pete Escovedo, Smash Mouth, Greg Kihn, and Third Eye Blind, just to name a few. Downtown residents and merchants were becoming more and more frustrated with the types of crowds some of the acts were drawing. What…
